The Instagram Audit That Actually Changed How I Create Content

A full walkthrough, every checklist, and the 8 AI prompts that do the hard thinking for you.

By Rachael Martinson ยท 2025 ยท 12 min read

Full transparency โ€” I’ve been documenting this whole “building something alongside my corporate job” journey for a couple months now, and one of the most useful things I did wasn’t a fancy strategy session. It was sitting down for 30 minutes and actually auditing my own page.

Not vibes. Not guessing. An actual audit.

So I built the exact system I use, and I’m walking you through the whole thing here โ€” every checklist, every question, and the AI prompts that make it 10x faster. Because if you’re a busy working mom (or honestly, anyone building a passion project on the side), you don’t have time to overthink this. You have time to do it once, correctly, and move on.

What this guide covers:

โœ“ Full profile + content audit (with checklists)

โœ“ 30-minute creator setup checklist

โœ“ Direction-setting questions that cut through the noise

โœ“ How to find inspiration without losing your voice

โœ“ Why brand colors matter more than you think

โœ“ 7 AI prompts to speed up every step

โœ“ The Ultimate Audit Prompt โ€” the big one that does it all

1 The Profile Audit

Start With What People Actually See First

Before you touch your content, look at your profile the way a stranger would. You’ve got 3-5 seconds before someone decides to follow or scroll past.

Bio + Profile Checklist

  • Does my bio say who I help + what I actually post about?
  • Is it clear within 3 seconds what I post about?
  • Are my highlight covers current (not from an old niche)?
  • Does my profile photo look like ME, consistently?
  • Is there a link people can actually click and use?
  • Do I have a contact email visible?

Grid + Aesthetic Checklist

  • If a stranger scrolled my last 9 posts, would they know my niche?
  • Do my pillars actually show up in the last 30 days?
  • Is there one topic I’m accidentally overposting?
  • Is there a pillar I claimed but never actually post?

This part stings a little the first time you do it โ€” mine definitely wasn’t as clear as I thought.

2 Audit the Content Itself

Pull your insights (or just scroll) and look at your last 30 days of posts. You’re looking for patterns, not perfection.

Top + Bottom Performers

  • What are my top 3 posts by saves and shares (not just likes)?
  • What are my bottom 3 posts โ€” what do they have in common?
  • Which pillar shows up most in my top performers?
  • Which format (talking head, carousel, b-roll) wins most?

Consistency Check

  • How many days did I actually post vs. plan to post?
  • Where did I go quiet, and what happened right before?
  • Am I posting a real mix of formats, or all one type?

Why saves and shares over likes: Saves and shares tell the algorithm your content is genuinely useful โ€” not just easy to double-tap. If you’re only tracking likes, you’re measuring the wrong thing.

3 The 30-Minute Creator Setup

This is the unglamorous part, but it matters. You may already have some of this โ€” just knock out what you can.

  • Update your bio and add a contact email
  • Update your link in bio (or set up a link-in-bio tool)
  • Pin 1-3 strategic posts
  • Organize your Story Highlights
  • Download one editing app you’ll actually use (not five you’ll never open)
  • Get familiar with Canva and build yourself a brand template
  • Set up DM automation (ManyChat, Stan Store, or FG Funnels)
  • Organize your camera roll
  • Create an “Ideas” folder on your phone
  • Create a B-roll folder for voiceover videos

Nothing here is complicated. It’s just the stuff that’s easy to keep putting off.

4 Specify Your Direction

The audit tells you what happened. These questions tell you what to do next. Answer them honestly โ€” this is where direction gets clear.

On Your Pillars

  • Which pillar do I keep avoiding, and why?
  • Which pillar feels easy and fun to make?
  • Is there a pillar I only added because I thought I “should”?
  • What am I posting about that isn’t actually one of my pillars?

On Your Audience

  • Who is actually commenting/DMing me โ€” is that my person?
  • What questions do people keep asking me?
  • Am I attracting who I want, or just who’s easy to attract?

On Monetization

  • Which income stream took the least effort for the best return?
  • What am I doing that isn’t actually moving me toward income?
  • If I could only post about ONE money-making pillar, which one?

This is the part most people skip because it requires actually sitting with the answers instead of just collecting more content ideas.

5 Find Inspiration Without Losing Your Voice

Here’s the thing about inspiration โ€” it’s not about copying someone else’s captions or hooks word-for-word. It’s about noticing patterns you can adapt into something that’s fully, unmistakably you.

How to Find Your Inspo List

  • Follow 5-10 creators one tier above you, in adjacent niches (not just your exact one)
  • Save posts that stop your scroll, then ask why
  • Look at creators outside social media too (writers, brands, TV)

What to Actually Study

  • Their hook style โ€” question, bold claim, or story open?
  • Their pacing โ€” fast cuts or slow, steady delivery?
  • Their format mix โ€” how often talking head vs. carousel vs. b-roll?
  • Their CTA style โ€” soft ask or direct ask?

The rule: Never copy a caption or hook word-for-word. Borrow the structure, then fill it with your own story, voice, and pillars โ€” that’s what actually builds trust.

6 Choose Your Brand Colors

I used to think color palettes were just a nice-to-have. They’re not. Consistent colors do two things: they make your content recognizable before someone even reads the caption, and they signal professionalism to any brand scanning your grid for a partnership.

How to Pick Your Palette

  • Choose 1 primary color, 1 accent, and 1-2 neutrals (3-5 total)
  • Pull inspiration from something meaningful โ€” not just trendy
  • Match the emotional tone of your niche (soft vs. bold vs. sleek)
  • Use the same palette across Canva templates + highlight covers

What Colors Tend to Signal

  • Pink/warm tones โ€” approachable, playful, relatable
  • Navy/deep blue โ€” trust, authority, professionalism
  • Cream/neutrals โ€” calm, editorial, easy to read
  • Bold brights (teal, coral) โ€” energy, confidence, stop-the-scroll

7 Let AI Do the Heavy Lifting

Once you’ve got your answers from the audit, this is where it gets fun. Here are the 7 prompts I use โ€” paste these into Claude or ChatGPT and let them work.

Prompt 1 โ€” Full Instagram Audit

Here’s my Instagram bio: [PASTE BIO] Here are my last 30 days of captions with engagement numbers: [PASTE] My pillars are: [LIST] My ideal follower is: [DESCRIBE] Audit my bio clarity, my best/worst performing pillar and format, and what I should stop posting.

Prompt 2 โ€” Find Your Patterns

Here are my last 30 days of Instagram captions and which pillar each one belongs to: [PASTE] Look for patterns in which pillar and format get the most engagement. Tell me what I should do more of and what to quietly drop.

Prompt 3 โ€” Sharpen Your Bio

Here’s my current Instagram bio: [PASTE BIO] My pillars are: [LIST YOUR PILLARS] My ideal follower is: [DESCRIBE YOUR PERSON] Give me 3 bio options that make it instantly clear who I help and what I post about.

Prompt 4 โ€” Plan Your Next 30 Days

Based on this audit: [PASTE YOUR ANSWERS FROM STEP 4] Build me a simple 30-day content plan using my strongest pillar and format, with a mix of top/middle/bottom funnel posts.

Prompt 5 โ€” Find Your Brand Colors

My personality is: [DESCRIBE] My content pillars are: [LIST] My vibe is: [BOLD / SOFT / PLAYFUL / PROFESSIONAL] Suggest 4-5 brand colors with hex codes that fit my personality and niche, and explain why each one fits.

Prompt 6 โ€” Find Your Inspiration

I create content about [NICHE] for [AUDIENCE]. Help me identify 5 types of creators (not exact accounts) I should study for structure and inspiration, and what to specifically look for in each type.

Prompt 7 โ€” The Brutally Honest Audit

This one’s different โ€” it works best with an AI tool that can browse live. It looks at your actual profile instead of what you paste in.

Act as a senior Instagram strategist and give me an honest, no-fluff audit of my live profile: [YOUR PROFILE URL] Look at my bio, profile photo, and link in bio. Look at my last 12 grid posts as a first-time visitor would. Open 3 recent posts and read the full captions, hooks, and CTAs. Look at my Highlights covers and titles. Then give me: โ€” is it instantly clear who I help and why someone should follow? What exact words are weak? โ€” do my last 12 posts feel cohesive? What’s the overall vibe, and is it the right one for my goal? โ€” quote my actual hooks back to me and tell me exactly which ones fail to stop the scroll. โ€” what % is lifestyle vs. education vs. personal vs. selling? What should shift? โ€” my top 5 changes to make this week to grow faster and convert more followers. Be blunt. I’d rather be embarrassed now than stuck later.

8 The Ultimate Instagram Audit Prompt

This is the big one. It combines everything โ€” profile, content, hooks, visuals, highlights, and reach โ€” into one massive audit. Copy this, fill in your username, and let AI hand you the full picture.

Go to my Instagram profile at instagram.com/[YOUR USERNAME] and conduct a full account audit covering the following: Assess my bio for clarity, specificity, and conversion. Does it clearly communicate who I help and what to do next? Review my profile photo, name field, CTA, and link in bio. Is my bio optimized for search (keywords in name field)? Would a brand manager landing here for the first time feel confident reaching out? Scroll through my last 30 posts. Identify my top performing content and look for patterns in what is working โ€” format, topic, hooks, structure. Analyze the opening lines of captions and first few seconds of reels. Which hooks perform best and which are weak? What content gaps exist based on what is performing well? What pillar is doing the heavy lifting and which ones are dead weight? Assess my reel covers, carousel designs, fonts, and colors โ€” are they consistent, readable, and scroll-stopping, or are they hurting performance? Do I have a recognizable visual brand or does my grid look random? Review my story highlights and flag any that are outdated, unclear, or missing. Based on comment quality and engagement patterns, am I attracting my ideal follower or just whoever’s easy to reach? Is my CTA strategy strong or am I leaving engagement on the table? Based on everything above, what are the most likely reasons my reach has dropped (or plateaued)? What are the top 5 things I should fix THIS WEEK to grow faster? Give me a prioritized list: what to fix immediately, what to test this month, and what to stop doing entirely. Include specific content ideas based on what’s already working. Be direct. Be specific. Quote my actual captions and hooks back to me. I want an audit that makes me uncomfortable enough to actually change something.

Pro tip: This prompt works best with Claude (with web browsing enabled) or any AI tool that can access live profiles. If your AI can’t browse, screenshot your profile, last 12 posts, 3 full captions, and your highlights โ€” then paste/attach them with this prompt. You’ll get 90% of the same value.

Your Turn

This whole thing took me way less time than I expected, and it made the next month of content so much easier to plan. Here’s the order I’d do it in:

This week:

1. Do the profile + content audit (Steps 1-2) โ€” 30 minutes

2. Knock out the creator setup checklist (Step 3) โ€” 30 minutes

3. Answer the direction questions honestly (Step 4) โ€” 15 minutes

4. Run the AI prompts โ€” including the big one (Steps 7-8) โ€” 15 minutes

Total: about 90 minutes for a complete reset on your page.

Redo this audit every 60-90 days as your content evolves. Don’t chase every pillar equally โ€” double down on what’s working. And the brutal audit stings for a reason โ€” that’s how you know it’s real.

If you do this audit, I’d genuinely love to hear what you find โ€” drop it in my comments or DMs.
